Garbage

Separation of Garbage and Recyclable Resources from Households

To reduce waste and facilitate the recycling and appropriate disposal of garbage, the Waste Collection Office has established different collection days for different types of garbage produced from households—recyclable resources, items with a plastic mark, burnable garbage, and nonburnable garbage. Please note that garbage is not collected on days other than designated days. In addition to collection by the Waste Collection Office, waste collection at designated locations is also available. For information on separation and collection methods for garbage and recyclable resources produced from households, refer to the following chart.

Taiking out Garbage

Recyclable resources

Newspapers, magazines, cardboard
  • Tie up newspapers, magazines, and cardboard with string before putting them out.
  • Put miscellaneous recyclable paper into paper bags so that it does not scatter.

Collection day : Day for “recyclable resources” (specified day, once a week)

Glass bottles used for beverages/foods and cosmetics, and aluminum/steel cans, spray cans, gas cylinders for portable gas stoves
  • Rinse glass bottles and cans, and place them directly in the recycling containers at the collection point (yellow container is for glass bottles, blue container is for cans).
  • Spray cans and gas cylinders for portable gas stoves must be used out completely before placing them in a transparent or semi-transparent bag.
  • Place the bag in a can recycling (blue) container.

Collection day : Day for “recyclable resources” (specified day, once a week)

Metal pots, kettles, and frying pans * Those with a diameter up to 30 cm (not including the handle)

Place them in the recycling container for cans(blue container).

Plastic PET bottles
  • Remove caps and labels from the bottles, quickly rinse them out, crush them, and place them in a transparent or semi-transparent bag for disposal.
  • * The cap and label are disposed of as plastic containers and packaging (items with a plastic mark)

Plastic containers and packaging(items with a plastic mark)

Plastic containers and bagsthat are used for packaging food or daily commodities, and that are no longer necessary as the product that was inside has been taken out and used; caps and labels of PET bottles.

After rinsing quickly or wiping clean, place in a transparent or semi-transparent bag for disposal.

Nonburnable garbage

Glass, metals, uncleanable bottles and cans, lightbulbs and broken fluorescent light bulbs, disposable pocket warmers, etc.
  • Place in a lidded container or a transparent or semi-transparent bag for disposal.
  • When disposing of sharp objects such as glass, needles, or knives, wrap them in paper and label them as “KIKEN” (meaning “dangerous”) to ensure that they do not injure collection workers.
  • Put broken fluorescent lightbulbs back in the packaging they came in and dispose of them separately from other nonburnable garbage.

Burnable garbage

Kitchen scraps, scraps of paper or wood, disposable diapers, sanitary products, used cloth, cigarette butts, plastic items (excluding those with a plastic mark), rubber and leather products, etc.
  • Place in a lidded container or a transparent or semi-transparent bag for disposal.
  • Remove as much water as possible from kitchen scraps before discarding them.

Collection day : Day for “burnable garbage” (specified days, twice a week) *Excludes some areas

Collection by groups

Town councils, neighborhood community associations, the PTA, or other resdidential groups consisting of ten or more households can decide on a date, time and collection location and bring recyclable resources such as newspapers and magazines, to that location to have a collection agency collect them. For details on collected items and the collection methods, check with each of the implementing groups. (Free of charge)

Drink boxes

Description : Paper milk cartons 500 ml or larger

Actions to be taken before bringing to the collection site : Rinse with water, unfold, and air dry

Styrofoam food trays

Description : Containers for meat, fish, vegetables and other food products

Actions to be taken before bringing to the collection site : Rinse with water and air dry

Batteries

Description : Cylindrical zinc–carbon batteries, alkaline batteries, lithium batteries, nickel oxyhydroxide batteries, rechargeable batteries

Used cooking oil

Description : Used, unsolidified cooking oil

Fluorescent lamps

Description : Circular types, straight tube types and bulb types

Actions to be taken before bringing to the collection site : Place it in the container of the replacement or wrap it with paper

Used clothing and linen

Description : Clothes, underwear, bed sheets, etc.

Actions to be taken before bringing to the collection site : Wash (keep buttons on clothing) then place them in a transparent or semitransparent bag for disposal.

  • Recycle House “Kazaguruma” (Days when the facility is open)

Small home appliances

Description : Home appliances that fit in the collection box (15 × 26 cm)

Actions to be taken before bringing to the collection site : Delete all personal data from information appliances such as mobile phones.

  • Please note that items collected will not be returned under any circumstances.
  • Remove all batteries from devices before disposing of them.

Description : Mercury type

Actions to be taken before bringing to the collection site : Put the device in the case it came with, or wrap it up securely in newspaper or another material.

Large-sized waste (Furniture, bedding and other items with one side exceeding 30 cm)

  2. Purchase large-sized waste disposal ticket (s) from any convenience store or a store displaying the largesized waste disposal ticket mark in Chuo City, affix the ticket (s) to your garbage.
  3. Leave your garbage outside of the entrance to your house on the specified day.

* If you move and plan to discard large quantities of garbage, including large-sized waste, contact the Waste Collection Office in advance.

TVs, refrigerators/freezers, washing machines/dryers, air conditioners

Return such items to the retailer where you purchased the item or to the retailer from which you will buy the replacement item.

PC Recycling Mark

Toxic, hazardous, or flammable items, or items that emit a foul odor

To dispose of gas cylinders, petroleum (gasoline, heating oil, paint), printer ink, heavy chemicals, matches, batteries, tires, pianos, and safes, contact the manufacturer or the retail store from where you purchased the item.

Motorbikes

Please dispose of by using a dealer that handles disposal of motorcycles or a designated collection center that can take your motorbike.
