When Keeping Dogs

Registration

If you decide to own a dog, you must register it with the Public Health Center and receive a “dog tag,” within 30 days of the date you take ownership of the dog (91 days old or older). There is a one-time registration fee of ¥3,000. If your dog dies, you donate the dog, or you move to another location, resulting in change to the registered information, you must notify the Public Health Center.

Rabies Vaccinations

Pet dogs 91 days old or older must be vaccinated for rabies once a year (between April and June). When the vaccination is administered by an animal hospital, a vaccination certificate will be issued. Take this to the Public Health Center to receive a vaccination certificate to be attached to the dog’s collar (once a year; ¥550).

Rules and Manners

Please keep your dog on a leash when taking it for a walk. Having no lead violates a Tokyo metropolitan ordinance, and you could be punished under the ordinance. Cleaning up after your pet is the pet owner’s responsibility.
