Fires

Fires occur more frequently in winter in Japan. Always be alert to prevent fires in everyday life. If a fire breaks out, take action by keeping the following guidelines in mind.

  • Shout loudly to warn your neighbors and ask for help in putting the fire out.
  • Call 119 and try to control the fire until a fire truck arrives. For times such as these, learn how to use a fire extinguisher.
  • The smoke from fires contains toxic gases. If you are escaping a fire, be sure to cover your mouth with a towel and stay as low to the ground as you can.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

  1. Pull out the safety pin.
  2. Point the nozzle at the source of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the lever to discharge the agent and sway the extinguisher side to side at the source of the fire.
