Japan’s Education System
The “6-3-3-4” education system in Japan is comprised of six years of elementary school (ages 6 to 12) and three years of junior high school (ages 12 to 15) for nine years of compulsory education, and three years of high school followed by four years of university for higher education. The new school year commences in April. Elementary school is open to children who are or will be turning 6 years old by April 1 of the current year, and junior high school is open to children who are or will be turning 12 years old by April 1 of the current year.
Although foreign residents are not obligated to attend Japanese educational institutions, they are able to attend municipal elementary and junior high schools. If you would like your child to attend a municipal school, please consult the section below.
